Community Meeting Minutes
December 2, 2009
Present: Laverne Roberts, Charlene Hardridge, Lou & Gwen Steirer,
Vernon Medicine Cloud, Jesse Morales, Nancy Lloyd, Betty Chute,
Katherine Bohanan, Linda Woods, Teresa Nemeth, Dejuta Apostol, Samuel
Rodriquez, Carmen Rodriquez, and William Underbaggage

Motion to approve the agenda was made by Gwen Steirer, seconded by
Kathy Bohanan, motion carried.
Motion to approve October minutes was made by Jesse, seconded by Betty
Chute, motion carried.
Laverne Roberts informed the community of a payment made to
Cuauhcihuatl Trinidad in the amount of $50.00 for loss of husband.
1. Native Family Outreach and Engagement team: Monthly report was not
provided to community.
2. Barnes & Noble: Volunteers to wrap books are needed. Donations
received for the wrapping will be given to American Indian Alliance
community fund. Gwen Steirer is in charge of the volunteer schedule.
Please call Gwen if you wish to help with the wrapping (408-241-7999).
3. Sobriety Pow Wow 11/22: Thanks to the volunteers for helping out.
4. American Indian Children Resource Center pow wow, December 5 &
6: AIA will be selling the 2010 calendars at Laney College.
5. Toys for Tots: Laverne reported gathering 555 names and all were
accepted and will call the volunteers when presents are ready to be picked
up and schedule time for wrapping.
6. Christmas dinner 12/20/09: Nancy Lloyd has completed the flyers for
distribution. Thank you to Nancy. The first Christmas planning meeting is
scheduled for Monday, December 7th at 6 pm, St. Philips Church.
Volunteers are needed. A letter for donations is available.
7. Family Giving Tree pickup: December 21st, 9:45 pm. Presents will be
taken to the All Tribes Baptist Church and given out to families on
December 22nd.
8. New Year’s Eve Pow Wow: Drum will be “Drum and Feathers”.
9. Indian Health Center: Vernon Medicine Cloud gave an invite to the
community to attend a “Christmas thing” on December 17th from 5 to 7
pm. There will be snacks. This will be at the regular clinic area.
10. First Nation Council: Undecided on the date of the church’s Christmas
dinner.
11. All Tribes Baptist Church will volunteer at Barnes & Noble, Christmas
dinner, and all wrappings, and will provide volunteers to serve at the
Christmas dinner.
12. KKUP: Teresa Nemeth reports the marathon went well. Donations
were down this year, which was $1,000. Teresa gave up her program slot
but plans to return to the station in the future.
13. GONA is still on January 22-24th at the Roosevelt Community Center
which is still being worked on.
14. Pow wow calendar: Cost $15.00 per calendar, 2 for $25.00, 10 or
more $8.00 ea.
15. Report on the passing of Mary Gonzales. Funeral pending.
16. Report on the passing of Judy Clark. Funeral was tonight.
17. Indian Education Conference: A vote will be made in the AIA Board
session on nominating an honored elder.
18. Gwen Steirer praised a community member, Teresa Nemeth, for
donating $600.00 towards the pow wows. Thank you from community.
19. Willie Underbaggage (408-679-8589): Represents the Indigenous
Nations. Report was made of a 12-week language program in the Lakota
language with 15 to 20 regular students and the group “pulled it off”. A
class was started in Oakland with other tribes attending. He wishes to start
another class in San Jose with the support of the community.
Community fund: $54.22
