Motion to approve the May agenda was made by Betty Chute, seconded by Gwen Steirer, motion carried.
August minutes: Not available.
Guest speaker: No show.
1. Loretta Miranda attending the AIA meeting mainly as an outreach for the Friendship House, drug and alcohol treatment center which is primarily for Native Americans, located in San Francisco, 56 Julian Avenue. Brochures of the program are available by calling 415-865-0964 or web site www.friendshiphousesf.org.
2. 7th Annual Fatherhood Conference 8/20: No one from AIA community attended.
3. Gathering 5/GONA 8/26-28: Good turnout.
4. COBELL SETTLEMENT: Cobell claim form deadline is Sept. 16, 2011 for individuals who are not in the Dept. of Interior’s system, yet believe they are class members of the trust admin. Class. To determine whether your info is contained in the Dept. of Interior system, call 1-800-961-6109. Important to have current address, SS#, DOB, tribal number of IIM number. Estimated settlement award provided. Telephones are manned 6 am to 6 pm..
5. SUN RISE CEREMONY to honor veterans. The students of the Native American studies project in Fremont with the help of their elders will host a 9/11 Sun Rise ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial. Location: Veteran’s Memorial, Walnut & Paseo Padre in Fremont. Ceremony will begin at 6:08 am September 11, 2011.
6. 6th ANNUAL AMERICAN INDIAN HERITAGE CELEBRATION: September 17th, Evergreen Community College. This year’s theme will be centered on sports. AIA will have a food booth. Contact Vernon Medicine Cloud for time and place: vmcloud @ihcscv.org.
7. Flyer presented: Honoring Sobriety powwow 11/20. Independence High School.
8. SACNAS National Conference 10/27 from 9 to 2:30. Devoted to advancing Hispanics, Chicanos and Native Americans in science.
9. HIS: Activities continue but the talking circle is “on hold” due to Jack Hyatt’s illness. Vernon Medicine Cloud reported that Indian Health Center is still breaking ground to enclose the area.
10. NATIVE FAMILY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT: No report.
11. FIRST NATIONS: No report.
12. BAPTIST MISSION: Continues to work with community.
13. TANF: No report.
14. KKUP: Next broadcasting is scheduled for September 25th. There will still be a marathon on Thanksgiving Day and volunteers are needed. A volunteer sheet will be distributed to fill 24 hours at 3 hr. shift. Broadcasts are the 2nd and 4th Sundays from 1-3 pm 91.5 FM. Community can listen to the program on podcast: Native Way. 15. FAMILY GIVING TREE: Deadline 9/16 and space is limited.
16. AIA selling See’s candy to raise funds.
17. ADDITION TO CALENDAR: David Romero requesting American Indian Council of Mariposa to be placed in the AIA calendar. David Romero also requesting that AIA sponsor the Color Guard group. David states he bought the flags and has ownership.
18. San Jose Veterans will have their own heritage day on November 17th and they hope to serve buffalo stew. David Romero is the contact person.
19. Christmas decorations: Betty Chute asking AIA to help locate decorations.
